Thonik was founded by Nikki Gonnissen and Thomas Widdershoven in 1993. Besides working for the cultural sector, we also do major projects in the public domain. In 2005 we started working for a marginal left wing political party in The Netherlands, the SP (Socialist Party). We balanced our forcefull simple designs with humor and an experimental use of media. During these years the party developed from an ‘against’ party to a serious alternative, becoming one of the countries main parties.
In our cultural designs we experimented with identities: for both the Marta Herford Museum in Germany and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam we shifted the identity from the logo (representing the institute), to the program or the content - by introducing an elaborate graphic language to connect the whole communications program.
Thonik is internationally recognized as a representative of Dutch Design. Typically Dutch is maybe that the objectives of the commission are achieved with minimum resources.
