Hara Design Institute
Kenya Hara is an internationally recognized graphic designer. In 2001, he took over as art director of MUJI, where he has helped to balance the company’s ‘no brand’ policy with high quality design. In addition to his recent work at MUJI, he has been a professor at Musashino Art University, and has participated in numerous high-profile projects, among them the Nagano Winter Olympics, the promotion of 2005 Aichi Expo, and the renewal of Matsuya Ginza department store.
Hara has also produced numerous design exhibitions, including ‘Macaroni Exhibition of Architects’, ‘HAPTIC: Awakening the Senses’ and ‘RE DESIGN: The Daily Products of the 21st Century’, the last of which toured the world and won him two International Industrial Design Biennale Grand Prizes (for Industrial and Graphic Design) and the Mainichi Design Award (2000). Hara is also the recipient of the Tokyo Art Directors Club Grand Prize (2003) for his MUJI advertising campaign, the Kodansha Publishing Culture Award and the Japan Inter Design Forum Prize, among many others. His books include RE DESIGN, HAPTIC, and Design of Design, a bestseller in Japan.
